As the evenings draw in and the leaves start to turn, life at Baxendale Care Home carries on at its usual busy pace. Here we look at what’s happening this autumn at our retirement home in North London – from our regular monthly favourites to a Halloween party and two special dates for the diary in December.
At Baxendale we offer long- and short-term residential care, respite care and specialist dementia care. Our staff rota is split into three eight-hour shifts, so care is available around the clock. Our activities programme runs all year round, and residents are always free to join in with as many or as few events as they like.
As the days grow shorter and the weather turns colder, having things to look forward to becomes especially important for care home residents. For more on why social activities for the elderly matter so much in a care setting, take a look at our previous post about the importance of social activity for care home residents.
At Baxendale, our activities programme continues throughout the year. Here, we share a number of the exciting events for residents planned throughout the Autumn…
Our ‘City of the Month’ and ‘Artist of the Month’ themes, which featured in our summer events round-up last year, are still going strong.
This month our chosen city is Cairo, the Egyptian capital on the banks of the River Nile. As always, the month builds up to a themed day celebrating the city’s food and culture.
Our Artist of the Month is Henri Matisse. Each month we learn about the life and work of the artist, then create our very own masterpiece in their style. The French painter is famous for his bold use of colour – but, as the Tate explains, when ill health stopped him painting in his late sixties, he started cutting shapes out of painted paper instead, and in time came to prefer these cut-outs to painting. It’s a lovely reminder that it’s never too late to try something new.
Our monthly cream teas are continuing, and we held our latest one early last month. Our Aperitif Hour, which we introduced in August 2025, also carries on every Sunday before lunch. It’s a chance for residents and visitors to enjoy a chat in the conservatory over a glass of wine or sherry and some nibbles.
This year we’ll be marking Halloween with a party for our residents. Themed occasions like this are a great way to break up the usual routine and add something different and fun.
December is already shaping up to be a busy month. Our Christmas party for residents and their families will take place on December 10 at 4 pm. Then, on December 17 at 3pm, the Zimmerettes – who perform a wide variety of songs and music – are booked to entertain our residents.
