Music is a universal language that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. For the elderly, music can be a particularly powerful tool for improving their quality of life. At our care home in Whetstone, we have seen first-hand how music can brighten up the lives of our residents, keeping their minds and bodies active and their spirits high.
At Baxendale Care Home, we believe in the power of music to enrich the lives of our residents. If you are looking for a care home in Whetstone that values the importance of music and offers a wide range of activities, please get in touch with us today.
Music is an excellent way to keep the brain active. Whether it’s playing an instrument, singing along to a familiar tune, or simply listening to a piece of music, the brain is engaged in a complex and stimulating activity.
Research has shown that listening to music can improve cognitive function, including memory, attention, and language skills. In fact, one study found that older adults who regularly listened to music had a 17% lower incidence of cognitive impairment. The NHS says that carefully chosen music is particularly beneficial for dementia sufferers.
Music has a profound effect on our emotions. A happy, upbeat song can make us feel joyful and energetic, while a calm, soothing melody can help us to relax and de-stress. For the elderly, music can be a wonderful way to improve their mood and overall sense of well-being. It can help to reduce feelings of anxiety and depression, as well as providing a sense of comfort and joy.
Music and memory are intrinsically linked. A particular song can transport us back in time, triggering vivid memories of a person, place, or event. The NHS says this can be especially beneficial for people with dementia, as musical memories are often preserved even when other memories are lost. Listening to music from their youth can help them to feel connected to their past and to their sense of self.
Music can also be a great way to keep the body active. Clapping along to a rhythm, tapping your feet to the beat, or even getting up and dancing can all help to improve physical function and coordination. At Baxendale, we have regular ‘movement to music’ sessions, which are a fun and gentle way for our residents to stay active. For more details follow this link.
At Baxendale, we have a piano in our communal lounge, which is often the focal point for a good old-fashioned sing-along. Music is also a regular feature of our planned activities, and we have a variety of visitors who come in to entertain our residents, including singers and musicians, particularly at Christmas.
