The Variety of Illnesses Which We Can Help Residents Manage

We appreciate that medical emergencies or difficulties can strike at any time of the day (or night) so it’s important that we have cover for our residents around the clock.

Every individual is different and may suffer from a variety of conditions – these may include difficulty sleeping, so it’s important we have cover through the night as well as waking hours. Other residents may suffer from dementia, and so may get confused during the night – 24-hour care covers any difficulties the resident may experience. (We also function as a dementia care home in Whetstone and have specialist facilities such as a dedicated sensory room).

More generally, medical emergencies are no respecter of 9-5 working hours – they can strike at any time – so it’s important to have someone ‘on call’ at all times to ensure that all our residents are safe and comfortable.

The Prompt Intervention

If there is an issue at any point during the day, then it is essential that it is responded to as quickly as possible – left unchecked or untreated a situation can deteriorate quickly and put a resident at serious risk. This can vary from someone going wandering at night (prompt intervention can prevent accidents such as falls) to medical problems such as asthma attacks and incontinence.

While we do not classify ourselves as a nursing home, our trained and experienced staff will either solve the problem immediately or refer it on to someone who can – the important thing is they are there on the spot and that no time is wasted in dealing with the issue.

It’s also worth noting that at Baxendale we can register you with a local GP, and you will also have access to other healthcare professionals. For example, we can arrange visits from dentists, chiropodists, opticians and district nurses for our residents.

The Other Activities

Caring isn’t just about looking after a resident’s daily medical needs, but also ensuring they have plenty of social activities to enjoy during the day.

We provide a range of events throughout the day – both within the care home and outside as we can arrange trips to local churches, theatres and even to the pub. Within the home we also have regular singalongs (there is a piano in one of the lounges), activities such as arts and crafts and bingo, quizzes, plus visitors from outside such as local musicians, religious leaders and more.

Some of these events are seasonal, so we have special themed events on occasions such as Christmas, Easter and Halloween.

A happy resident with plenty to do is usually a healthy resident as well and, remember, anyone in the home can enjoy these activities – including those who need short-term or respite care – not just long-term residents.

The Peace of Mind

Having care available 24 hours a day helps to further reassure our residents and put them at ease during their stay with us. It’s important for our residents to know that we are there for them, throughout the day or night.

It also gives residents’ loved ones additional reassurance that we can provide around the clock care and that any issue will be promptly dealt with.
