For many people, the idea of leaving your own home and coming to live in a new place can be disconcerting. However, at Baxendale Care Home, a residential care home in Whetstone, North London, we take plenty of steps to ensure that this transition is as easy as possible. To aid in the process, we make sure that your bedroom is your own personal space.
Although our rooms come fully furnished, so that residents don’t need to bring any larger items, there is still the opportunity for you to personalise your own space. Photos and artworks can be hung on the walls, and you can bring plenty of smaller personal items with you as well.
The largest item residents need to bring is a TV set (although we do provide them if you are only a short-stay resident), and we can also set it up for you too. You may be able to keep your own landline phone number too and connect up into the room, although residents will need to sort this out with BT themselves (and you will be responsible for paying your own bill) – but there are phone sockets in all the rooms should you wish to pursue this option.
Alternatively, residents can bring their own mobile phone and also take advantage of the free Wi-Fi which is available throughout the building.
We will still need access to residents’ rooms, but only if any medical treatment/help is needed. We also provide a laundry service so everyone can always have plenty of clean clothes to wear.
In addition, we have a housekeeping service so we can tidy up the room in your absence – this can be a big advantage for some of our residents who have mobility problems as they can’t do all the usual cleaning without difficulties. All of these services are included within our fees.
Another of the advantages of the residents’ rooms in Baxendale is that they have a great view out over the grounds and the lake. Everyone has the chance to see the changing seasons through their own window, and research has shown that the presence of water has a soothing effect on people’s well-being and mental health.
We never forget that all our residents have specific medical needs which have an impact on the facilities which can be put in each room. More specifically, this means that rooms can be fitted with shower hoists which can transport residents directly from their beds into the shower room.
All 37 of our ensuite rooms have a wet room with a toilet, basin and shower – this is as a result of the recent upgrades. And, if it helps the resident get a good night’s sleep, adjustable beds are also available, if required.
Although care is available around the clock, seven days a week – ensuring that we are a 24-hour caring home in the Barnet area – we always give you as much independence as possible, because we encourage our residents to live as fulfilling lives as possible.
At Baxendale, we do plenty of other things to help residents settle in. This includes our regular activities (including some outside the home), which we encourage everyone to take part in.
We ‘pair up’ new residents with existing ones so they can settle in more quickly and get used to the routines, and we encourage regular visits from friends and family. We also have a ‘sun lounge’ which is a bit quieter than our main lounge, so if you are after a bit of peace and quiet (but don’t want to stay in your own room), you should find it here.
