Many of our residents at Baxendale Care Home – a long- and short-term care home near Barnet – come to us following a surgical procedure in hospital. Here we look at the types of injuries involved, the process by which our post-surgery residents come to stay with us, and how we can help them to recover.
Residents admitted to Baxendale from hospital are usually recovering from injuries associated with falls for instance, hip, wrist or leg injuries or age-related medical conditions.
We don’t have any direct links with hospitals who have carried out the surgery – however, Barnet Social Services often refer patients who require short-term respite care (following a stay in hospital) to us. Patients and their families, friends, or representatives can also contact us directly to arrange short stays.
We unfortunately can’t accept emergency admissions, as all residents require a pre-assessment prior to admission. However, Baxendale can arrange pre-assessments at short notice and admissions can be arranged within 48 hours if necessary.
At Baxendale, we use a variety of methods to help people to recover from surgery. We always remember that everyone is different, and recovery times will vary. So, there’s no such thing as an average short-term stay.
We have access to a variety of specialist services, which can be accessed by the care home directly or via Baxendale’s own GP, to aid the recovery process and to tailor it to the individual’s needs. These specialist services include physiotherapy, speech and language therapy and occupational therapy. We can also call on the services of district nurses and dietitians.
We also encourage post-surgery residents to become more independent with their personal care (such as washing and cooking) and their mobility in preparation for discharge and returning to their own home.
Around half of our post-surgery residents end up staying at Baxendale Care Home as long-term residents because they like the care and services we can provide – we function as a long-term retirement home for the North London area as well as offering short-term care.
Subject to availability, it is possible for residents to transition from being a short stay resident to a permanent resident without having to relocate rooms. Another option is for residents to be discharged home and return at a later agreed date.
