Baxendale Care Home – a residential care home in North London – offers a complete medical service to all our residents, however long they are staying with us. Our caring staff operate in three eight-hour shifts, every day of the week, to ensure that we truly are a 24-hour care home.
However, we also offer additional medical services, principally for residents who may be recovering from a recent operation, or who have a condition that requires special care or treatment. Here we look at these services in more detail, and how they can help your loved one live a more independent and enjoyable life.
At Baxendale Care Home we offer physiotherapy services. This means not just helping with mobility but coming up with a programme of exercises tailored to each individual resident, to help alleviate any pain and reduce the risk of falls.
This is particularly useful if any of our residents suffer from muscle or joint stiffness resulting from arthritis, which is particularly common in the elderly. Residents can also be helped to carry out their daily tasks, such as washing and cleaning, by working with the physio. They may also be able to help with the rehabilitation process if the resident is recovering from surgery which has limited their mobility.
We can also call on speech and language therapists to those residents who need them, or who we think will benefit from their services. This is more likely to be for post-surgery residents who may have had a stroke, although other conditions can also impair speech, such as motor neurone disease and autism – and some accidents can also cause problems in this area.
These therapists may also help relatives as well by offering emotional and practical support, and by establishing methods of communication with their loved one(s).
Again, this service (like some aspects of a physiotherapist’s work) is useful because it allows our residents to become more independent. This applies whether they are recovering from surgery, or they have a long-term condition that affects their mobility or ability to carry out everyday tasks. OTs can draw up a plan of action in consultation with our own staff.
Occupational therapists may also be able to help residents who have dementia, by focusing on their hobbies, skills and achievements rather than their condition. Baxendale functions as a dementia care home in Whetstone as well, and we have a sensory room which residents with dementia find particularly beneficial.
At Baxendale we can also call on the services of a dietician, which is useful if your loved one has a medical condition which necessitates avoiding certain foods. Dieticians can also help encourage healthier eating patterns, which is important for the elderly as they may not ‘burn off’ the calories as quickly as younger people.
Our five-star rated kitchen can come up with a suitable set of meals for all our residents, whatever their age or condition – for more information, check out our previous blog post here.
At Baxendale we operate as a team with physios, therapists and dieticians working with residents to ensure they have a more fulfilling life. Our medical team also includes Baxendale’s own GP, who residents can register with once they arrive (although they don’t have to – they can stay with their own doctor if they prefer) and district nurses, who can visit as and when required. This is all backed up by our own caring staff.
