Our Packed Programme of Activities
Medical experts say staying active is particularly important for elderly people. It doesn’t just keep the problem of loneliness at bay, but can also improve their physical health as well, reducing the risk of developing dementia, or suffering from heart disease or a stroke.
At Baxendale we ensure that there’s plenty for our residents to do. This means there are regular activities in our communal lounges, ranging from arts and crafts, to games, themed events, concerts and guest speakers. We also run frequent outside trips – including to the pub, the theatre and places of worship.

Peace and Quiet is Important Too
However, it’s equally important for the elderly to have some ‘quiet time’ as well. This is particularly true for those with dementia, who can easily be distracted by extraneous background noise, which can easily upset or confuse them. A relaxed environment, particularly in the evening and at night, can improve their quality of sleep as well.
There are a number of ways in which we offer our residents some solitude.
- Rooms with a view – our rooms, which are very much our residents’ own private space, all have a glorious view over our extensive garden (pictured above) and grounds, which are full of colour and vibrancy all year round. It’s effectively a mini-oasis in the heart of north London (there’s a lake as well). And you don’t need to stay indoors to appreciate it, as there’s an outside terrace too.
- The quiet space – our library, which doubles as a visitor room, is an excellent space for a spot of quiet reading. We also have a sun lounge, a quiet space to enjoy the view across the tranquil grounds, read a newspaper or play a game with friends.
- The sensory room – although this is aimed primarily at our dementia patients – we can be described as a 24-hour dementia care home in Whetstone – other residents can (and do) use it as well. The combination of interactive lights, projections and soothing music all combine to produce a restful atmosphere.
- Our staff – all the members of our team know how important it is to appear calm and unruffled, and it’s something we have consistently achieved. Don’t just take our word for it – one of our Care Quality Commission reports noted the ‘relaxed’ atmosphere and the fact that staff never appeared to be too hurried or rushed (but they were always on hand in the event of a problem).

How are you admitted to Baxendale Care Home?
You don’t need a GP referral to be eligible to come to Baxendale, you can contact us directly using the methods above, or by emailing us at info@baxendalecare.org.uk.
We will need to contact your GP for a medical report as part of the pre-assessment process. We issue a contract prior to residency, which needs to be signed and returned by the date of admission.
Do residents have to take part in any of the activities?
No, there is no obligation to take part in any of the social events we lay on (and sometimes there may be medical reasons why residents can’t), although we do encourage them to as we like everyone to feel at home at Baxendale.
All our residents are paired with a nominated keyworker so they can raise any concerns. There are also regular meetings involving staff, residents and Trustees.
