Baxendale Care Home has just celebrated its 60th anniversary. The celebrations, which were originally meant to take place in November 2023, were unfortunately postponed due to COVID-29 restrictions in place at the time. On Saturday, January 11, however, the delayed occasion happily coincided with the official opening of some new refurbishments which have been carried out at the residential care home in North London.
The event began with a champagne reception, followed by a welcome speech from Baxendale’s chair of trustees Fiona Halstead. The attendees, including the Worshipful the Mayor of Barnet, Councillor Tony Vourou, right, and the Mayoress, Mrs Carole Vourou, marked the occasion with a toast followed by an official cake cutting.
Martin Russell, The Deputy Lieutenant of Barnet, left, cut the ribbon that announced the new facilities of the home. In the new cinema room, attendees watched a short film about the history of Baxendale, enjoyed by residents, staff, and visitors alike.
As well as the new cinema room, Saturday’s attendees also had the chance to see the new entry and reception area. Along with the refurbished lounges and new patio area, below, some residents’ rooms have also been upgraded and improved.
Baxendale’s origins date back to the 1860s, when noted philanthropist Louisa Twining set up premises in London’s Great Ormand Street to care for elderly or infirm women. Growing numbers meant that the home outgrew its premises in the 1880s and moved to Woodside House, located in Victorian entrepreneur Joseph Baxendale’s Woodside Estate in Whetstone. A legacy in his will ensured that Baxendale remained a retirement home.
In the late 1950s, much of the land in the southwest part of the site was sold, making way for the new purpose-built residential care home that was constructed to the west of the original building.
Today, Baxendale is a home where residents can enjoy around-the-clock care in the secluded North London surroundings. The communal facilities, along with quieter rooms, make it suitable for people with a variety of conditions, including dementia or those who need short-term respite care.
A full programme of activities and outside visits, along with meals produced by a five-star rated kitchen, gives Baxendale residents a stimulating day-to-day experience. Alongside the residents, families will always get the support that they need from our dedicated staff, who work around the clock to ensure the safety and comfort of those that call it home.
